Replanting is still a good option this early in the season

As some Illinois farmers struggle with too much rain in the south and not enough in the north, a BASF agronomist says replanting is still a smart option at this point in the season.

“The good news is we are early enough in the season if we need to replant at least we will have most of the optimal potential of the crop. If stands are not good or plants drowned out, replanting is definitely an option that some folks are probably going to take.”

Kurt Maertens tells Brownfield especially compared to fields in northern Iowa that are very dry, overall Illinois corn and soybeans are off to a good start.

“So, if you are a grower in Illinois, I think we have a great start to this crop and obviously with prices we have a lot of opportunity. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Maertens covers eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois for BASF. In his territory he says there is some uneven emergence where fields were too dry at planting, but if timely rains continue those plants will catch back up.
