More drought relief coming for parts of Midwest and Plains

Parts of the Midwest and Plains struggling with dryness can expect continued relief.

MDA Weather Services ag meteorologist Don Keeney says recent rains over central and western Iowa, far eastern portions of Nebraska and South Dakota, as well as northern Missouri will be accompanied by additional moisture.

“As we get into the next several days, it looks like the best time period for the relief would be Friday, Saturday and into early Sunday.  Especially across central and eastern South Dakota over into Minnesota.”

He tells Brownfield the one and two-inch rains are beneficial to pod filling soybeans, and might give corn a late-season boost.

Further out, Keeney says Midwest weather conditions will vary.

“We’re looking at an overall normal precipitation pattern for September, so I don’t expect any major problems with the early harvest.  But then again, I don’t expect it to be completely dry either.”

As winter wheat seeding begins in the western Plains, Keeney says that crop should also benefit from the soil moisture recharge.
