Red meat, poultry in cold storage down on year

The USDA says there was less red meat and poultry in cold storage at the end of 2021 than the end of 2020.

Red meat totaled 928.456 million pounds, a decrease of 6% on the year, with beef also falling 6% to 503.792 million and pork 4% under the year before at 398.947 million pounds. That indicates generally solid demand, with the USDA recently reporting record December beef production and a slight year-to-year decline in pork production.

Poultry was reported at 915.171 million pounds, a drop of 16%, with chicken 14% lower at 741.745 million and the turkey supply 23% below a year ago at 171.051 million pounds.

The poultry numbers also indicate strong year-over-year demand, with December poultry production only down 2% on the year, with chicken production 1% lower and turkey down 9%.

The USDA’s official 2021 cold storage totals are out February 28th.
