Record beef, pork production in September

U.S. beef and pork production during September hit new all-time highs for the month. Slaughter levels for both cattle and hogs were up 4% on the year, cancelling out the smaller average live weight for cattle and unchanged weight for hogs. Monthly red meat production totaled 4.323 billion pounds, 2% less than August, but 4% more than September 2015.

Beef came out at 2.179 billion pounds, up 4% on the year with a slaughter of 2.616 million head, 6% above a year ago, and an average live weight of 1,370 pounds, down 12.

Pork was reported at 2.126 billion pounds, 4% more than September 2015, with a kill of 10.167 million head, 5% higher, and an average live weight of 280 pounds.

The USDA says red meat for the year to date is 37.049 billion pounds, up 3% from this time last year.
