Recent rains timely for Indiana crops

Recent timely rains provided relief to Indiana crops suffering from lack of moisture.  Central Indiana farmer Mike Beard says that rainfall was just what his crop needed.  “My probes tell me that my soil profile is full of water,” he says.  “We’re ready to go for the next week or so.  And the crops do look pretty good at this point.”

According to USDA’s latest weekly crop report 84 percent of the corn crop is in the dough stage, 44 percent is dented, and 2 percent mature.  One percent of the crop harvested for silage is complete.

Beard says the rainfall was extremely beneficial to his soybean crop – but he could still use one more good, soaking rain.  “We cut the top off our soybean crop because we planted late,” he says.  “We’re doing as well as they can be expected to do at this point in time.”

Eighty-nine percent of the state’s soybean crop is setting pods and 1 percent has started dropping leaves.

While corn and soybean harvest is still a few weeks away, harvest is underway for tobacco, tomatoes, mint, and potatoes.
