Rain in Nebraska helps alleviate some drought conditions

Northeast Nebraska farmer Debbie Borg has almost wrapped up planting and says recent moisture came at just the right time.

“The rain is just so appreciative. We’re obviously not out of the drought, there’s not much sub soil moisture in our area at all, but two inches of rain is going to go a long ways.”

She tells Brownfield conservation practices like no-till farming have helped preserve soil moisture and avoid massive erosion. “We’re glad that we’ve been no tilling for so long because we have had ferocious winds, but everything has stayed. Intact pretty well.”

And, Borg says, moisture will be the biggest concern for this year’s crop. “We don’t get timely rains, we will not have much of A crop because there is, I think less than 10% subsoil in our area.”

She says she finished corn planting last week and soybeans are almost done and that most of the area is also finishing planting.
