Rain helps Ohio crops

Many of Ohio’s crops had noticeable progress in the past week. Farmers benefited from widespread rainfall which improved soil moisture and helped the crops.  USDA’s statistician Cheryl Turner says 68% of topsoil now has adequate moisture and 11% has surplus moisture.

Fifty-five percent of Ohio’s corn is now silking with 8% in the dough stage.  Fifty-five percent of the crop is in good to excellent condition.

Sixty-five percent of the soybeans are now blooming with 27% setting pods.  Overall, 54% of the soybean crop is in good to excellent condition.

Ninety-five percent of the oats have headed and 27% of the crop is now harvested.

Second-crop alfalfa hay is 79% harvested, and 13% of the third crop is in.  Second-crop progress for other hay is 61% done.
