Rain delays for Michigan harvests

Corn-nebraska sunset 8-12This week’s rains have delayed harvesting activities in many parts of Michigan.

Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski tells Brownfield Ag News dry bean harvest is on hold until farmers get a break in the weather, but early sugarbeet harvest is ongoing.  “Yields look very good at this point, sugar content is a little low but we kind of expect that when we start digging in late August and early September.”

He says while farmers would prefer better commodity prices this year, agriculture is a cyclical business.  “We know it’s part of the business, we will get through this, we will tighten our belts—we will manage to move forward.”

He says harvest 2016 for Michigan farmers still has a long way to go and a lot can happen in the next two months.

Bednarski grows corn, soybeans, dry beans, sugarbeets and white wheat with his wife and three sons in Tuscola County.
