Rain a highlight in latest Iowa crop update

Bookend rains the past week have lifted the spirits of many Iowa farmers.

USDA’s latest crop update says precipitation early and late in the week helped offset prolonged heat and dryness across much of the state.

Corn development is tracking closely with the five-year average with 53 percent at the dough stage or beyond.  Corn condition fell to 73 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans are maturing close to normal with nearly 70 percent setting pods.  Soybeans considered good to excellent dropped two percent of the week to 71 percent.

Oat harvest is at 82 percent, and the third cutting of alfalfa is approaching 30 percent.
