R-CALF welcomes further scrutiny into cattle market

The head of R-CALF USA says they’re pleased lawmakers are calling for investigations into the major meat packers. Bill Bullard says R-CALF has been calling for it for years and filed a lawsuit last year. He tells Brownfield Ag News, “Even before the Holcomb (Kansas) fire and before the COVID-19 crisis we recognized our industry was in crisis and we alleged that the four packers have violated our anti-trust laws so we now welcome the further scrutiny that is now being requested.”

Bullard says they would welcome an investigation by the Department of Justice investigation or the Federal Trade Commission or both, “It was the Federal Trade Commission that had conducted the investigation that provided the foundation for that Packers and Stockyards Act.”

Although the USDA is conducting an investigation, Bullard says it does not have subpoena authority and cannot bring criminal charges.
