R-CALF sends Vilsack proposed draft bill to reinstate COOL

The ranch group R-CALF USA has sent a proposed draft bill that would reinstate mandatory Country of Origin Labeling to Ag Secretary Vilsack.

Their letter says they’re encouraged by comments Vilsack made at his confirmation hearing in early February about revisiting COOL for beef if it could be done without triggering retaliatory tariffs authorized by the World Trade Organization.

R-CALF says its proposed bill would remove concerns raised by the WTO about the COOL law which Congress repealed several years ago.

The letter says the proposal keeps the intent of the old COOL law which eliminated the mislabeling of foreign beef products as ‘Product of the USA.’

R-CALF argues a functioning mandatory COOL law would build demand for US cattle and help consumers who want to know where their beef comes from.
