Purdue workshops to focus on crop marketing and farm finance

Hoosier farmers will learn how to improve their crop marketing and financial management skills at eight upcoming workshops from the Purdue Center for Commercial Agriculture and Purdue Extension.

Purdue University’s Jim Mintert says the workshops are especially important as farmers continue to face tight margins.

“We think this is an opportunity to make a modest improvement in your returns on your crops,” he says. “A modest improvement on a per bushel basis is enough in many cases to shift you over from perhaps a break-even situation to a profitable situation.”

He tells Brownfield the other session will help farmers talk to their ag lender.

“It’s going to help people do a better job of generating some financial projections and use that as a way to have a better understanding of their current financial position,” he says. “It will also help people learn how to look at their financial records in the same way a lender would, which will put them in a much better position.”

The workshops, co-sponsored by Indiana Soybean Alliance and Indiana Corn Marketing council, kick off this Thursday in Huntington and Friday and Plymouth. They are free but farmers must register before attending.
