Prioritizing corn fields for harvest especially important this year

A Burrus Seed representative says prioritizing corn fields for harvest is especially important after a delayed and extended growing season.

“We’ve had a little bit of a challenging year thus far and we want to try to maximize the returns that we can get.”

Josh Gunther tells Brownfield farmers need to consider additional stressors on the crop along with the planting date and relative maturity. He says the main focus should be on fields with stalk rot.

“We should move those harvest dates up a little bit and if that is in combination with summer root lodge that we may have experienced this year, those should become the first priority.”

After those fields are harvested Gunther says to monitor harvest moisture and vulnerable fields.

“If you have some fields that were drought prone, they might be starting to cannibalize their own stalks and can be a little more prone to some of these stalks rots as well.”

He recommends farmers create a harvest plan and be ready to adjust it depending on fall weather.
