Prevent Plant acreage could be highest in Minnesota and Dakotas

Excessive rains in west-central Minnesota forced some farmers to take prevented planting this year.

Traverse County corn and soybean grower Tom Frisch (frish) says it was a frustrating spring.

“It was really wet in our area, so it was kind of a struggle. The tiled ground (was planted) a little late, but still went in in good shape. But we struggled getting the rest of it in and there are definitely some prevented planting acres in our area.”

He tells Brownfield that was also the case in 2011 and 2019, but this year it’s more widespread.

Frisch says prevented planting can really mess up marketing plans.

“It kind of throws it out the window.”

No official prevented planting estimates have been announced by USDA, but discrepancies between the March 31st prospective plantings report and June 30th acreage report indicate the majority of prevent plant acres are in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Brownfield interviewed Frisch at the Minnesota Soybean Future of Soybean Retreat in Brainerd Wednesday.
