Prevent Cruelty California Campaign approved for November ballot

The Prevent Cruelty California campaign that is pushing for larger space requirements for laying hens, veal calves and breeding hogs will be added to California’s November ballot.

If voted in, the initiative would require all eggs sold in California to come from birds given at least 144 square inches of space, which meets the United Egg Producers’ cage-free standard. It would require all California poultry operations to convert to cage-free systems by the end of 2019. And the measure would ban the sale of pork products in California originating from farms that use gestation crates after the year 2021 and the sale of veal products from farms that use veal crates after 2019.

The campaign, led by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), collected more than 650,000 voter signatures to make it onto the ballot. It aims to increase space requirements in California’s Proposition 2 law, which voters approved in 2008.
