Precision data key for sustainability

The co-founder of Farmers Edge says precision agriculture helps farmers tell their sustainability story.

President and CEO Wade Barns tells Brownfield precision data can track and verify environmental impacts as well as other inputs.

“As farmers embrace technology, as technology becomes easier for them to use, they’re going to be the best stewards of the land and the biggest thing is making it easy for them to verify it and tell the story to the consumer that they are doing a really good job out in the field.”

He says more and more customers like General Mills continue to request measureable ways farmers are being sustainable. Barns says precision technology and the Field to Market initiative are working to meet that need.

“We’ve been able to, with our program, be able to provide a very realistic view of what a farmer’s carbon footprint is when he uses nitrogen fertilizers.”  He says, “We track not only the use of where we put fertilizer and the yields coming off—so the efficiency, but we’re also tracking fuel efficiency.”

Barns says they’re also working to empower farmers to implement strategies that fit in with end users sustainability mandates.  Farmers Edge is a precision agronomy business that reaches over 4 million global acres.
