Precipitation provides relief to some Indiana crops

Scattered storms across Indiana provided some relief to crops, but dry pockets still persist.

According to USDA’s latest weekly crop report, 95 percent of the corn crop is in the dough stage, 62 percent is dented, and 8 percent has reached maturity.  Nine percent of the crop has been harvested for silage and 72 percent is still rated good to excellent.

The soybean crop continues to advance as 5 percent of the crop has started dropping leaves while 94 percent is still setting pods, 75 percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Southwest Indiana farmer Joe Steinkamp says harvest is still a few weeks away on his farm – but not for everyone in his area.  “Our corn plants are getting unusually brown already from some kind of rust,” he says.  “And one of my neighbors planted a 2.8 maturity soybean on the 15th of April – the day that I was planting corn.  He’s planning on harvesting soybeans this week, but the rest of us are a good 2 to 3 weeks out.

Nine percent of the tobacco crop is harvested and harvest continues for apples, cucumbers, and tomatoes.

Topsoil 94 percent adequate to surplus and 90 percent of subsoil moisture is adequate to surplus.
