Pre-emergent herbicides could alleviate supply chain issues, lower weed pressure

An agronomist says farmers who apply a pre-emergent herbicide could see advantages during the 2022 growing season.

Mark Pieper is with Indiana-based Beck’s seed company and says it could help reduce product shortages. “The supply chain may or may not have post available.  People will be grabbing them because a lot of them are used and if you can get away with spraying once versus a couple post-pass that will only help the supply chain.”

And, he tells Brownfield it may reduce weed pressure after emergence and eliminate post-herbicide application. “There is (going) to be a lot of growers that realize that putting down a pre will not only help with resistance of going with one herbicide by also like I said extend your herbicide control throughout the summer.”

Pieper covers Nebraska and spoke with Brownfield during the Nebraska Ag Expo.
