Poultry, red meat stocks get tighter

The USDA says red meat stocks in cold storage at the end of June 2021 were 868.757 million pounds, down 8% on the year.

Beef was reported at 398.66 million pounds, a year to year decline of 7% with a 1% increase in monthly production, while pork was 442.145 million pounds, 4% less than last year despite a 5% decrease in monthly production.

Poultry in cold storage came out at 1.147 billion pounds, 15% below a year ago, with chicken at 738.368 million pounds, a drop of 15%, and turkey at 406.008 million pounds, a decrease of 14%. The turkey total included record monthly lows for whole hens, legs, and “unclassified”.

The USDA’s next set of annual meat production estimates is out August 12th.
