Potato growers face significant challenges

The head of the National Potato Council tells Brownfield growers have two major hurdles to overcome this year.

Kam Quarles says one is drought and the other is high input costs.

“Are you going to have enough water? And also, where are input prices going to be? And the supply chain difficulties have impacted a lot of producers including the potato industry.”

He lists fertilizer prices and access to crop protection tools as major concerns.

“Those may well echo for not just for this year, but for future years. So can you get them, and what’s the price?”

Quarles says despite some weather challenges, potato planting has been going “fairly well.”
