Port of Duluth presents export opportunities for Minnesota soybean growers

The Minnesota Soybean Growers Association expects the Port of Duluth to become a valuable export hub.

MSGA president Bob Worth says the Port of Duluth is poised to be an important tool for moving soybean products to the United Kingdom and other European countries.

“A lot of countries over there that we can ship to them, and they don’t need a lot, so a container is a perfect way to do that.”

He tells Brownfield it’s more expensive to ship out of the Gulf of Mexico or Pacific Northwest.

“So when they go out the St. Lawrence Seaway, it’s a good cheaper way to get that product to us. And now that we use the Port of Duluth, it’s a good way for us to get product out of Minnesota.”

Worth says having three outlets for soybeans grown in the Upper Midwest benefits farmers.

“Because our basis is going to get narrow because everybody is going to compete for the same product.”

Brownfield interviewed Worth Wednesday during the 2023 MN Ag Expo in Mankato, Minnesota.
