Pork groups ask USDA for more help preventing ASF

The National Pork Producers Council and 30 state pork groups are asking the USDA to restrict the import of organic soy products for animal feeds from all ASF-positive countries.

The groups have written to Ag Secretary Perdue, thanking him for the USDA’s work mitigating the impacts of African Swine Fever but saying pork producers “remain deeply concerned about U.S. vulnerability” to the “terrible” disease.

They say the Feed Risk Task Force has identified the Animal Health Protection Act as the means to limit high-risk feed ingredients.

They’re also urging USDA to update the Emergency Management Response System saying the functional exercise showed the system has flaws that could provide challenges in real time during an ASF outbreak.
