Pork, beef in cold storage up 1% on year

USDA reports pork and beef supplies in the nation’s warehouses at the end of December were a little bit above a year ago but poultry supplies were down sharply.

The total amount of beef in cold storage came out at 451.199 million pounds, an increase of 1% from last year, with boneless beef at 391.158 million pounds, up slightly from a year ago.

Pork was reported at 481.673 million pounds, a 1% year to year rise, with the biggest increases in the bone-in picnic cut and variety meats. The closely watched pork belly stocks were down 19% at 41.122 million pounds.

Poultry stocks totaled 837.159 million pounds, 16% less than last year, with chicken dropping 22% to 629.078 million pounds and turkey up 7% at 205.679 million pounds.

All told, the pork and poultry supplies were smaller than expected while beef topped the average pre-report estimate by around 10 million pounds.
