Popcorn farmer sees product on trade trip to Japan

A popcorn grower from the US’s top producing state says an overseas trade market is growing and helping boost demand for his product.

Mark McHargue of Nebraska says he saw his product in Japan’s largest cinema chain on a recent trade trip. “It was really fun to sit their with the owner of the cinema chain and the purchaser of most of the popcorn that goes into Japan as a grower knowing that potentially off of my farm is being served in Japan.”

He tells Brownfield “They served us popcorn.  They actually caramelize their popcorn in their theater.  The have like five different flavors.  They’re pretty innovative on how they sell Nebraska popcorn in Japan.”

Data from USDA says Nebraska is at the top of the list with Indiana and Illinois next.
