Planting: So close, yet so far away

Planting was in sight for a central Illinois farmer until he was hit with rain again last night.

Joe Bolte farms the research plots at Beck’s Hybrids Practical Farm Research in Effingham, Illinois.

“Tomorrow we could have started working ground and probably would have been able to start to planting tomorrow as well. I would say we were really close and on the border line there, but we had another six tenths of rain last night.”

And with more rain in the forecast for tomorrow, he tells Brownfield it looks like they will be kept out of the fields for a while now.

But, Bolte says they are doing all they can right now to make planting easier when the time finally comes.

“Especially since now we know we are probably going to be working a little longer days and probably need to be more efficient since we are going to have these narrower windows this year.”

He says he is optimistic that fields in his area will dry up in time to get planting done on time.
