Planting nears completion

Corn and soybean planting in Indiana is wrapping up.  However, field work last week was variable as dry conditions in parts of the state allowed for farmers to continue to plant and work ground and downpours in other areas halted any planting progress last week.

Ninety-five percent of the state’s corn crop has been planted with 83 percent emerged.  By area, 86 percent is emerged in the northern part of the state, 84 percent in the central, and 76 percent in the south.  Seventy percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Eighty-one percent of soybeans have been planted and 55 percent emerged.  By area, 87 percent is planted in the north, 84 percent in the central, and 66 percent planted in the south.

The winter wheat crop continues to advanced, 84 percent of the crop is headed with 70 percent rated good to excellent.

Warm weather created ideal conditions for the first hay cutting of the year with 46 percent of Alfalfa hay and 41 percent of other hay cut last week.
