Peterson calls for sugarbeet disaster aid

House Ag Committee chairman Collin Peterson continues to call for disaster aid for sugarbeet farmers in the Upper Midwest.

The Minnesota Democrat met with USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey to outline the challenging beet harvest this fall.

He says securing assistance for sugar producers is critical and is hopeful that USDA is on track to get it done.

Severe weather prevented many farmers from harvesting their crop, and current disaster programs do not account for the budgeting constraints and unique structure of cooperatives.

It’s estimated that nearly 150,000 sugarbeet acres went unharvested because of early winter conditions.
