Perdue says progress is being made in U.S.-China trade talks

U.S. and China trade talks resume in Washington tomorrow and Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says progress is being made.

Perdue says farmers are understandably anxious as the trade war with China continues. But he says continued trade talks are a good sign.

“The good news is I’m optimistic that we’re still talking,” he says. “Chinese President Xi has sent the number two guy in China (Vice Premier Liu He) to speak for him.”

He says President Trump will hold out until the right deal is reached.

“Talks are progressive and when dealing with something as complicated as a trade relationship with China it’s complicated,” he says. “Enforceability of these agreements is important and we’ve made a lot of progress but both countries have to be committed to having a good deal.”

Although the timeline is unclear, he says a final trade agreement will be signed by President Trump and Chinese President Xi.

Perdue made these comments at Purdue University this morning.
