Perdue confirmation among highlights of a busy week in DC

The Senate is scheduled to vote later today on the confirmation of former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue as the next agriculture secretary.  Debate is set to begin at 3pm with a vote scheduled for 5:30 and Perdue’s nomination is expected to be easily confirmed.  Perdue is expected to be sworn in on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday the President will host a roundtable discussion with farmers and sign the “Executive Order Promoting Agriculture and Rural Prosperity in America”.  News reports indicate the executive order will create an interagency task force to examine the concerns of rural America and suggest legislative and regulatory changes to them.

The continuing resolution that is currently funding the government expires on Friday and Congress has to reach an agreement by the end of the week on a plan to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year in order to prevent a government shutdown.  According to Agri-Pulse cotton and dairy producers have been lobbying Congress to include provisions to make cotton seed eligible for the Price Loss Coverage program and make improvements in dairy’s Margin Protection Program.
