Perdue announces new mentoring program for beginning farmers

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue has announced a new partnership with SCORE, the nation’s largest volunteer network of business mentors, to support new and beginning farmers.

Perdue says while young farmers need land, equipment and access to capital, some also need business advice and guidance.

“Mentorship will help them figure a budget, figure out what they can afford, and come in prepared with applications that say, ‘this is the cash flow that I need, these are the risk management tools I have, this is the marketing I’ve already done, and this is what we expect to have happen’, in a business pro-forma kind of way,” he says.

Perdue announced the new partnership in Des Moines during the Iowa Agriculture Summit. For more information, go to newfarmers.usda.gov/mentorship.
