Pennsylvania Congressman proposes putting whole milk back on the school menu

A Pennsylvania Congressman has proposed putting whole unflavored milk back on the school lunch menu.  Republican Tom Marino’s bill to amend the National School Lunch Act to allow whole milk was introduced last week and has been referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Marino wrote to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue, saying he consistently gets constituent questions about the restriction of whole milk in schools and is asking Perdue to update the federal nutrition standards for school meals.  Marino says making the change would provide nine essential nutrients to the diets of young people and would help increase consumption of fluid milk, which would be good for struggling dairy farmers.
