Patchwork of silage yields expected

DF Seeds president Janna Fritz tells Brownfield she’s hearing a lot of variability in yields as corn silage harvest begins.

“We’re seeing a very wide range of what coming off field by field, mile by mile in some cases,” she says.

In some drier regions of Michigan, she says it might be a year farmers look into alternative feedstuffs to make up for losses. “We’re finding there might not be quite the tonnage that we were hoping for,” she says.

Fritz says DF Seeds has been growing its crop portfolio for the state’s dairy farmers and recommends reevaluating forage mixes after harvest.

Fritz also grows corn, soybeans, dry beans, and wheat with her family in Michigan’s Thumb.
