Organic grains following conventional markets higher

A diversified crop farmer in northern Iowa says organic grain prices are slowly following conventional markets higher.

Rusty Olson grows corn, soybeans, and organic crops near Garner.

“It followed it slowly on the way down, and we kind of saw the bottom last summer going into fall with the organic markets, very similar to your standard futures contracts. And it is turning around again.”

He calls the organic corn market “attractive” right now and tells Brownfield he changed his mind on planting organic soybeans.

“I was not going to raise soybeans, but I kind of talked myself back into it. I was just going to do (organic) oats because oats did very well for me last year. But we’re seeing soybean prices in the low $20’s and then $8.50 to $9 range on organic corn.”

Olson says organic grain prices might sound great, but farmers earn every penny of the premium.
