More opportunities for farmers to have ag plastics recycled

There are more opportunities for farmers to have their agricultural plastics recycled.

The Recycling Association of Minnesota has launched a broader effort to continue a program started in Sibley County ten years ago.

Tri County Solid Waste Director Al Christensen says local co-ops recognized farmers needed a place to dispose of grain bags, bale wrap, silage bunker covers and other materials.

“There was some burning and burying going on.  There were some farmers doing the proper disposal of ag bags through the land fill, but we knew there was an issue out there.”

He tells Brownfield the program has grown from a few dumpsters at area elevators to what has become a free on-farm service for those that qualify.

“It’s a minimum of 50 animals on the farm, or a minimum of 2,000 pounds of plastic per year.”

Revolution Plastics is handling the collection and final recycling of ag bags.

“Once we get an area that’s qualified that has the density of producers that uses plastic, (Revolution Plastics) will come in with a baling hub.  Then the producers will get a free container that goes back on their farm site, and they get in the rotation for pick-up service.”

Revolution Plastics offers similar services in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas.
