Opinions on cattle traceability vary

Cattle traceability for disease tracking has received mixed opinions from cattle producers.

Matt Hardecke, the treasurer for the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, tells Brownfield it’s hard to tell what a traceability program would look like, but said most producers support a voluntary traceability program.

“What does it look like,” Hardecke said. “You know, I mean you go all the from producers that want mandatory to producers that don’t want anything. And so, there is no real unified front, I think the bell curve kind of points towards a voluntary program.”

He said a main concern for cattle producers is possible misuse of their information.

“The biggest fear, outside of a data breach, is the federal government and that information getting into hands that are antiagriculture,” he said.

Hardecke said whether producers support or oppose traceability, they should be engaged with their county and state cattlemen’s associations to voice their concerns.
