One trial after another for Minnesota farmer in 2019

A farmer in southwest Minnesota says it was one trial after another this year.

Ron Obermoller of Brewster says wet, cool conditions hampered planting.

“My county had 40 percent prevented planting. The neighboring counties had 30 and one had 50, so it’s tough in the area.”

He tells Brownfield he was fortunate to get his crop in somewhat timely.

“It was very wet (and) we had a storm come through in June. I had one field that was 60 percent green snap. That was my biggest issue with the corn.”

Obermoller describes July and August as too dry.

“So we didn’t get the size to the kernels, we didn’t get the size to the beans.”

He says it’s been a tough fall too with an early freeze, excessive moisture, low test weights, and disappointing yields.

“Luckily, I have a couple days of fieldwork left. Then I can kind of retire the year and figure out how I’m going to market the crop.”

Obermoller says propane delays slowed harvest as well.
