Ohio governor signs measure to further protect Lake Erie

Ohio Governor John Kasich has approved legislation to improve protections for Lake Erie and the environment.

Senate Bill 2 would revise current environmental protection laws on dredging Lake Erie as well as give more authority to the state’s Environmental Protection Agency.

Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Director of State Policy Tony Seegers tells Brownfield the legislation provides the Lake Erie Commission more oversight.  “It will help coordinate and make sure we’re not having different agencies doing similar things and duplicating efforts.  I think it’s going to be helpful to have a lead.”

He says this measure comes after Senate Bill 1 which prohibits certain winter manure applications and the state’s fertilizer applicator certification program in efforts to reduce phosphorus in Lake Erie’s western basin 40 percent by 2025.
