Ohio farm groups want Great Lakes funding

Ohio farm groups are calling for support of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative in the 2018 federal budget.

Brad Reynolds with Ohio Corn and Wheat tells Brownfield they and the Ohio Soybean Association are concerned President Trump’s proposal to eliminate EPA funding of the initiate would be detrimental to conservation and water quality improvements made in the region.  “Thanks to science-based research and implementation of best practices, we believe we have taken important steps in addressing the water quality issues that are going on, but we know there’s more that needs to be done.  We’re going to continue to look at anything that we can do as a farming community and agricultural industry to better align ourselves with management practices and making sure we’re going our part.  In addition to doing our part, we think the federal government should do their part.”

The President has proposed eliminating the $300 million fund in his 2018 budget and nearly 31 percent cuts to EPA’s total budget.

More than 3,000 projects in the 8-state Great Lakes Region, including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, have been completed since the fund was established in 2010.
