Ohio: corn 56%, soybeans 58% good to excellent

Dry conditions early in the week helped Ohio farmers make significant progress in winter wheat harvest.  According to the latest weekly crop report 92 percent of the crop is mature and 39 percent has been harvested – a 29 percent jump from the previous week.

Corn and soybean crops are reported in mostly fair to good condition. Seed Consultants agronomist Mike Earley tells Brownfield it just depends on where the field is located.  “Some areas are not looking too bad,” he says.  “Clear across northern Ohio fields are pretty spotty.  You come to the central part of Ohio – they’ve had excessive rain, and southern Ohio is not in too bad of shape.”

Three percent of the corn crop is silking and 56 percent is rated good to excellent.  Nine percent of soybeans are blooming and 58 percent are rated good to excellent.

Depending on the weather, farmers have been busy baling hay and straw, applying post-emergent herbicides, and side-dressing corn.
