Ohio ag groups asking for clarity to address planting challenges

Ohio ag groups are asking Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to provide clearer guidance on what farmers can expect to address planting struggles.

In a letter, the groups write that there is uncertainty surrounding trade assistance payments, disaster aid, and prevent plant coverage under crop insurance. They say many Ohio farmers are uncertain how to proceed.

the groups are asking for provisions to allow planting and normal harvest, including silage and baleage, and grazing of forage crops and cover crops on prevent plant acreage without penalty and without date restrictions.

They are also asking to allow harvest, including making silage and baleage, and grazing of forages on CRP ground and all eligible acres without penalty and date restrictions.

The groups are asking for a one-time allowance due to the unprecedented weather challenges dairy and livestock farmers are facing.

The groups include Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association, Ohio Dairy Producers Association, Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Pork Producers, Ohio Poultry Association, Ohio Soybean Association, Ohio AgriBusiness Association, and Ohio Sheep Improvement Association.
