The Ohio Department of Agriculture is considering a permit for a proposed egg farm near Harrod in northwest Ohio. The proposed farm would include two layer houses, each housing up to 200,000 hens.

The ag department says the proposed operation is standard and not as large as other farms but will be a cage-free operation if approved. A department spokesman says there are already a few cage-free operations in Ohio and they are seeing more and more cage-free permit applications.

The facility would be owned by Ruth Farms, LLC, and operated by Happy Yolks, LLC. The Ohio Ag Department has issued a public notice and will be holding an open house and public meeting on December 7th.
