October poultry production down 6% on year

October poultry production fell 6% on the year to 4.424 billion pounds. That includes 3.892 billion pounds of chicken and 522.765 million pounds of turkey.

The USDA says that followed a 7% decline in the chicken slaughter to 797.097 million head and a 6% decrease for turkeys at 21.101 million head, which canceled out mostly higher average live weights. All chickens averaged 6.48 pounds per bird, .07 heavier than October 2019, and all turkeys averaged 30.94 pounds, an increase of 0.17 pounds.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 11.939 million pounds, down 14% or .2% of the preliminary live weight, and post-mortem condemnations were 28.895 million pounds, 12% under a year ago or .65% of monthly production.

The most recent cold storage report showed a 4% year to year lower move for domestic poultry supplies.

The USDA’s next set of poultry production estimates is out December 10th.
