Oat, potato planting underway in Minnesota

Continued soggy and snowy conditions slowed Minnesota farmers last week.

The USDA crop progress report says with fewer than two days suitable for fieldwork, activities were limited to fertilizer and manure application, rock picking, and vegetable planting.

There were pockets where small grains were seeded, mostly in southern Minnesota where it was warmer and drier.

Three percent of the oat crop has been planted, one week ahead of last year but almost a week behind the five-year average.

Potatoes are one percent planted.
