NPPC urges elimination of all punitive tariffs on pork

China has said it will cut tariffs on some US goods. National Pork Producers Council Spokesman Jim Monroe says although the removal of tariffs on US goods is progress, it’s unclear the impact it will have on US pork.

“We’re working to confirm the specific impact on US pork in our discussions with the US government,” he says.

He tells Brownfield that China needs access to reliable and affordable sources of pork that the US can provide.

“We continue to urge China to remove all punitive tariffs on US pork so that we can get back on a level playing field with international competitors that currently have access at eight percent tariffs,” he says.  

Monroe says if all restrictions were removed, in 10 years, US pork would double sales, create 184,000 new American jobs, and reduce the overall US trade deficit with China by nearly six percent. 

He says they are hopeful for improved access to China.
