NPPC says US-Japan deal huge for US pork industry

The National Pork Producers Council says the pork industry couldn’t wait much longer for the trade deal with Japan to be finalized.

Nick Giordano heads up trade efforts for NPPC.  “It’s huge for of course the pork industry,” he says.  “But broadly speaking for US agriculture.  And of course, the door is still open for a full-fledged FTA negotiation.”

He tells Brownfield a resolution to the trade and tariff issues with China would be another big win for US pork producers.

And, he says, they’re hopeful that is on the horizon.  “And getting it done quickly,” he says.  “Our position is to get us tariff-free access to China for at least five years and get us that certainty.  And we will single handily punch a huge dent into the US-China trade imbalance.”

Now that Japan has ratified the deal, implementation is expected to begin in early 2020.
