NPPC says pig-free pork is indeed, “Impossible”

The National Pork Producers Council says Impossible Foods’ new plant-based substitute for pork violates labeling laws.

Dr. Dan Kovich, Director of Science and Technology for NPPC, says Impossible Pork…

“…is in fact impossible. There are well established laws and conventions that pork can only come from a pig.”

He says USDA defines pork as the meat of a pig and the FDA says it is illegal to present a food as another food item.

“It is often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but going so far as to take the name itself is a step too far. They need to come up with a different name for their product.”

Kovich says NPPC supports consumer choice and competitive markets on a level playing field, but plant-based and cell-cultured products designed to mimic real meat should face the same regulatory and labeling requirements as livestock.

NPPC is working to develop a clear understanding of what imitation meat products are made of and protect the term “pork”.
