NPPC responds to USDA Coronavirus Food Assistance Program details

The National Pork Producers Council thanks the USDA for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program but says additional government intervention will be needed.

NPPC vice president of communications Jim Monroe calls the financial and emotional crisis caused by the pandemic “overwhelming.”  He estimates U.S. pork producers will lose more than $5 billion collectively for hogs processed into the food supply this year.  And because of pork harvest plant closures and slowdowns, he says producers also face staggering costs associated with hogs that can’t enter the food supply.

Monroe says NPPC will continue to advocate for solutions to sustain producers as the council assesses the food assistance program and the extent of its impact.
