‘Not a seed in the ground yet’

An east-central Iowa farmer says he would normally be done planting by now.

“And I haven’t had a seed in the ground yet,” says Dave Walton of Wilton, Iowa.

He says excessive rain and delays in getting anhydrous have made for a difficult spring.

“As every day goes along, you get a little bit more worried. But we’re not that far into May yet. If we were a week later, I’d get really concerned. But today, as we talk, it’s concerning, but I’m not losing sleep over it yet.”

Walton says with “two good, sunny days” he could be back in the field. But he says the short-term forecast doesn’t sound very promising.
