Northeast Iowa farmer keeping busy during harvest

A northeast Iowa farmer is working ground and applying fall fertilizer.

Bob Hemesath of Calmar raises corn and has a wean-to-finish hog operation.

“Got the crew here, they are incorporating manure as we speak. Got some tillage going on, doing some fall tillage on some corn-on-corn. And getting some fertilizer spread on the stuff we get combined, so normal fall stuff for us I guess.”

He tells Brownfield rising input costs are concerning.

“Even with the higher prices of corn and soybeans, margins could be tight next year with the cost of fertilizer and all the things keep going up.”

Hemesath says he’ll be taking advantage of selling opportunities whenever there’s a profit to be had.
