No drought relief in sight

The South-Central Lower Peninsula of Michigan is facing the severest drought conditions in the state and crops continue to decline.

USDA says nearly all corn and soybeans have emerged while 79 percent of dry beans are planted. Alfalfa harvest is 72 percent complete for first cutting.

Winter wheat condition was at 55 percent good to excellent and 93 percent of the crop headed.  Sugarbeet condition was at 62 percent good to excellent.  Corn condition dropped a point to 55 percent good to excellent, soybeans were down four points at 53 percent.

Dry conditions are also stressing fruit and vegetable crops where not irrigated. Pest pressure has also increased while growers report substantial-sized asparagus harvests.
